RECIPE: HAM & SWISS HAWAIIAN TAILGATE SLIDERS

Based on the recipe from The Starving Chef Blog

Ingredients for a Batch of 9 Sliders (4.5 servings):
– 1 package       King’s Hawaiian Sweet Rolls (12-pack or 16-pack, but only 9 to be used)
– ¼ cup              Unsalted Butter, melted  (1/2 a stick)
– 2 Tbsp             Whole Grain Dijon Mustard
– 1 Tbsp             Honey Mustard (or Honey Dijon Mustard)
– 1 tsp                Worcestershire Sauce
– 1 tsp                Celery Salt
– ½ Tbsp            Black Sesame Seeds
– ½ Tbsp            White Sesame Seeds
– 1 Tbsp             Poppy Seed
– 1 Tbsp             Dried Minced Onion
– 2 tsp                Dried Minced Garlic
– ¼ cup               Mayonnaise (conventional or avocado oil mayo)
– 8 – 10 slices     Swiss Cheese
– 12-16 oz.         Thin Sliced Deli Ham
– Salt & Pepper to taste

Instructions (step-by-step):

  1. Preheat the convection microwave oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit (or a standard oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit). Make sure the center rack is installed within the convection microwave oven, to allow hot air to circulate around the pan as the sliders bake. Note: The temperature of 325 degrees accounts for the 25-degree reduction in baking temperature often recommended in the Owner’s Manual of convection microwave oven manufacturers.
  2. Remove the sweet rolls from their packaging as a whole group of 12. Then remove one row of 3 rolls, leaving a 3×3 group of 9 rolls together as a single loaf. The 3 rolls removed are leftovers you can consume for another purpose.
  3. Using a large, serrated knife, carefully cut the entire group of rolls in half so that there’s a bottom section and a top section. Try not to compress the tops of the rolls while cutting.
  4. Place the group of rolls into an 8” x 8” square baking pan or casserole dish, and set aside.
  5. In a small mixing bowl, add the melted butter.
  6. Add the whole grain Dijon mustard, honey mustard, Worcestershire sauce, celery salt, both types of sesame seeds, poppy seed, dried minced onion and dried minced garlic.
  7. Stir everything together with a silicone spatula, until well incorporated. Then set aside for 10 minutes to let the flavors develop.
  8. Meanwhile, bring the pan with the rolls back, carefully remove the top and set it aside on a plate or cutting board, and spread the mayonnaise thickly over the bottom half of the rolls using a silicone spatula or knife.
  9. Place 4 to 6 slices of the Swiss cheese on top of the mayo, from edge to edge of the bread. If using 6 slices of cheese, overlap them halfway in each row.
  10. Arrange the slices of deli ham on top of the cheese to form a thick layer from edge to edge.
  11. Sprinkle salt and pepper to taste, on top of the ham.
  12. Place the remaining 4 slices of Swiss cheese on top of the ham.
  13. Put the top half of the rolls back on.
  14. With the silicone spatula (or a basting brush), spread the butter-mustard mixture in a thick layer on top of and on the sides of the rolls, getting the mix into the cracks.
  15. Cover the top of the pan lightly with aluminum foil, so that it’s mostly tented over the rolls and not pressed onto the tops.
  16. Bake the sliders covered, for 10 minutes at 325 degrees Fahrenheit (350 degrees in a standard oven).
  17. Remove the foil and bake the sliders uncovered for another 10 minutes, or until hot and golden brown on top.
  18. Serve the sliders hot, room temperature, or chilled.
